The Black experience in the United States has historically been shown through a lens of political and civil unrest. Although I come from a region built upon unrest and struggle, that is not the only story of the Black American South. Being born and bred in the South gives you a unique perspective on everyday life when creating within it. I’ve come to wonder, how deeply the Black experience shown in mass media and art impacts our real lived experiences. And how do we, in turn, create work that honestly reflects our experience? With suBlack I explore what it looks like to consider a more honest Black Southern experience through the lens of Black Southern artists.
